Pricing:

I price my work by the project (based on a formula that factors in the dimensions of the work, materials , and the time commitment involved in the creation of the work).

Billing is done in two phases.  The design fee (50%) at the start of a project, and the remaining balance (50%) upon completion, prior to delivery.  Should a client choose not to move forward with the design after receiving an initial sketch or concept, the design fee is retained as compensation for my time spent on the first phase of the project.

Should a client refuse the finished artwork, the design fee (50%) is retained to cover the cost of the materials and time spent creating the artwork.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How does the process begin?

Everything begins with a friendly and open conversation either by phone or email via the commissions form below.  You are under absolutely no obligation to buy or sign anything during the initial conversation and planning stages.  The purpose is to discuss expectations of both parties and to hopefully agree on a design concept to move forward with a commission agreement.

How do you determine the price?

See above.

How long does it take to finish?

The time it takes to complete a composition varies depending on the size and complexity of the design.    Deadlines and delivery dates may be negotiated.  The final selling price may be increased for rush deliveries.

Can you create a design based on a photo?

Yes, but there are limitations.  I cannot directly duplicate artwork based on copyrighted images, licensed designs or other artist’s work without their written consent.  Also, not all photos are appropriate for certain mediums and design concepts.  During our initial conversation, we may discuss options or interpretations in order to agree on the best approach.  Most issues are minor and can be worked around.

Can I choose the colors you use?

My goal for every design or concept is to create a balanced and beautiful composition.  I will create initial sketches and drawings and provide color samplings and pallet options if you like.  These are to be used as a guide so that we can agree on a general color scheme, layout and tone of the project.

However, the creative process is also complex and I cannot always determine the specifics of the creative process.  In order to do my best work, I need to have some flexibility.

Can I see the design before you begin?

Yes.  I will provide initial sketches and drawings before the final production begins.  At that point we will have another discussion to ensure our expectations for the project are in line and no alterations, changes or additions need to be made.  This is the time to express any concerns or changes in the design.

Can I see the artwork while you are making it?

Yes and no.  There are designated times that you will see and review various stages of the artwork like the initial sketch and the draft stage.  Also, I do tend to incorporate a mid-point stage for the client to view progress at a point I am comfortable with.  However, I do not provide “in-progress” photos or files while working on commissions between stages.  The piece may go through several drafts and variations before I’m satisfied with the design between stages and I have found that sharing in-progress photos or files to the client between stages is confusing and slows down the whole creative process.

With every commission, my goal is to meet or exceed the client’s expectations.  During the creative process, if for some reason I find that a major part of the design or concept needs to be changed from the original sketches, I will communicate with the client to explain my reasoning and we can then discuss the options.  As the artist, I must have the final word on creative decisions, and I take that responsibility very seriously.
